Rukayat Shittu, Nigeria’s youngest lawmaker, won the All Progressives Congress (APC) re‑election primary for the Owode/Onire State Constituency seat in the Kwara State House of Assembly.
She defeated her sole opponent, Sulyman Ayegun, on Wednesday to secure the party’s nomination.
The primary is a turning point for the constituency, which has traditionally followed a rotational system between the Owode and Onire areas, limiting representatives to a single term.
Observers noted the contest was closely fought, and Shittu’s victory signals strong intra‑party backing ahead of the general election.
As the APC flag bearer, she will campaign on her legislative record and future plans for the constituency.
Should she win the general election, Shittu would become the first lawmaker to serve a second term in Owode/Onire, potentially ending the long‑standing rotation pattern.
Political analysts say the primary outcome will shape the upcoming campaign, as parties mobilise across the area in preparation for the polls.
