Nigeria's youngest lawmaker Rukayat, wins Kwara APC Primary for re-election

By Demola Akinyemi, ILORIN

Nigeria’s youngest lawmaker, Rukayat Shittu, won the All Progressives Congress (APC) re‑election primary and will stand as the party’s candidate for the Owode/Onire State Constituency seat in the Kwara State House of Assembly.

On Wednesday, Shittu defeated her sole opponent, Sulyman Ayegun, to secure the party’s ticket.

The primary is a turning point for the constituency, which has traditionally followed a rotational system between the Owode and Onire areas, limiting representatives to a single term.

Party officials and observers noted the contest was highly competitive, with Shittu’s victory indicating strong intra‑party support ahead of the general election.

As the APC flag bearer, Shittu will campaign on her record and her vision for continued representation of the constituency.

If elected, she would become the first lawmaker to win a second term in Owode/Onire, potentially ending a long‑standing political pattern.

Stakeholders say the primary outcome will set the tone for a closely watched general election, as parties mobilise across the constituency.
