Abdussamad Dasuki, newly appointed Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, pledged that the new Minority Caucus leadership would offer “principled, credible and effective” opposition, focusing on good governance instead of confrontation for its own sake.

During a meeting in Sokoto on Tuesday, Dasuki welcomed elders and stakeholders from the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency who congratulated him on his appointment. He outlined the caucus’s vision, emphasizing accountability, transparency, legislative scrutiny, and policies that enhance Nigerians’ lives.

He stated that the caucus would continue to engage constructively with the executive while consistently holding the government accountable in the national interest.

“We are committed to providing principled, credible and effective leadership for the Minority Caucus. Our primary responsibility is not opposition for its own sake, but constructive opposition that promotes good governance, accountability, transparency and laws that improve the lives of Nigerians,” he said.

Dasuki said the caucus would model its approach after former Minority Leader and current Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, whom he cited as a model of effective opposition politics during 2011‑2015.

He added that the minimum benchmark for the present Minority Caucus would be the standard established during Gbajabiamila’s tenure, when the opposition was pivotal in holding the government accountable and contributing meaningfully to legislative debates and national development.

“Our minimum standard as a caucus will be the exemplary minority leadership once provided by Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who demonstrated that a vibrant and responsible opposition is essential to strengthening democracy by holding the government accountable and ensuring that the interests of the people remain paramount in parliament,” he stated.
