Real Madrid have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Chelsea left‑back Marc Cucurella, a move that could become one of the most significant transfers of the summer.
Veteran sports journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the arrangement between the parties, and the 27‑year‑old Spain international is expected to join the Santiago Bernabéu after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending his four‑year tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Cucurella’s future at Chelsea had been a topic of speculation following remarks he made during the March international break, when he openly questioned the club’s direction and criticized the dismissal of former manager Enzo Maresca in January.
Those comments reportedly did not sit well with the club’s hierarchy.
After arriving at Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 for an initial fee of £55 million, the defender has reportedly expressed interest in returning to Spain this summer.
Manchester City had also monitored Cucurella’s situation, particularly as Maresca was tipped to succeed Pep Guardiola at the Etihad. However, Chelsea preferred to negotiate with a club outside the Premier League if the defender were to leave.
The transfer represents a setback for new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who reportedly wanted to keep Cucurella as part of his plans for the upcoming season.
Chelsea are now expected to look for a replacement. Dutch defender Jorrel Hato remains the club’s primary left‑back option, but Alonso is believed to want additional experience in the position before the new campaign begins.
The move is part of an ambitious recruitment drive by Real Madrid following the arrival of Jose Mourinho. The Spanish giants are also reportedly interested in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, although the Blues are determined to retain the Argentine World Cup winner and have placed a substantial valuation on him.
Madrid are also seeking reinforcements in attack and have reportedly launched a £129 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.
In addition, reports claim the club have secured free‑transfer agreements for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva following the expiration of their contracts.
With several high‑profile targets on their radar, Cucurella’s expected arrival signals Real Madrid’s intent to strengthen significantly ahead of the new season.
