Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal has been excluded from Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup because of fitness concerns.
Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on X that the 34‑year‑old is unlikely to regain sufficient fitness before the tournament, ending the prospect of another major international appearance for one of Spain’s most seasoned players.
Carvajal, who has suffered several injury setbacks in recent months, was attempting to reach full fitness before Spain completed its World Cup preparations. The latest information indicates that the veteran defender will not be selected.
The Real Madrid defender has been a pivotal player for both club and country, having won multiple UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles and contributing significantly to Spain’s recent resurgence under De la Fuente.
His absence is a notable setback for Spain’s defensive line ahead of the tournament, prompting the national team to look to younger right‑back options.
Carvajal’s exclusion also raises questions about his long‑term international future as Spain continues transitioning to a new generation of players for upcoming competitions.
In the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, Spain will face Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
