REA Signs Memoranda of Understanding to Strengthen Clean Energy Transition and Food Security

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has entered into two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) designed to accelerate Nigeria’s clean‑energy transition, boost agro‑industrial productivity, and foster innovation‑driven economic growth.

The agreements, signed with the Nigerian Commodity Exchange (NCX) and the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN), signal the REA’s expanding role beyond electricity provision, positioning it as a national hub for productive infrastructure, industrial expansion, innovation, and sustainable transformation.

The first MoU, between the REA and NCX, establishes a National Collaborative Framework for Agro‑Industrial Cluster Development, Renewable Energy Deployment, and Commodity Trade Formalisation across Nigeria, supporting the federal government’s food‑security agenda under President Bola Tinubu.

NCX, a federal government‑backed body created to regulate, operate, and promote transparent agricultural commodity trading, will work with the REA to embed renewable‑energy infrastructure into agricultural value chains nationwide.

Through this partnership, the two agencies aim to create a scalable national model that links reliable solar‑powered energy systems with commodity aggregation, processing, storage, trading, and export infrastructure.

The collaboration is expected to cut post‑harvest losses, enhance value retention for Nigerian agricultural products, strengthen food security and sovereignty, stimulate agro‑industrial productivity, and support the growth of non‑oil foreign‑exchange earnings.

The REA noted that the partnership underscores the close relationship between energy access and agricultural productivity as key pillars of national development.

The second MoU, signed with YIN, outlines a strategic collaboration to co‑host and jointly implement the Technology Ecosystem Dialogue (TED).

YIN is a leading national platform that bridges Nigeria’s digital skills gap by empowering young people, women, startup founders, and persons with disabilities through innovation, STEM education, entrepreneurship support, mentorship, and technology‑driven capacity‑building initiatives. To date, more than 30,000 young Nigerians have benefited from YIN’s programmes and training.

Under the agreement, both institutions will jointly mobilise resources, engage stakeholders, and conduct the TED annually in line with national priorities on clean energy, innovation, digital transformation, and smart mobility.

Within this framework, the REA will provide institutional support and technical expertise to strengthen the clean‑energy and sustainability aspects of the initiative, while also taking an active role in exhibitions, policy dialogues, panel sessions, hackathons, stakeholder engagement, and the implementation of key outcomes from the dialogue.

The partnership is also expected to deepen discussions on the convergence of renewable energy, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, youth development, and sustainable infrastructure systems in Nigeria.

By signing both agreements, the REA highlighted its evolving strategic role in linking renewable‑energy deployment with broader national priorities, including food security, industrialisation, technology innovation, youth empowerment, and economic resilience.
