Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez could be edging closer to an exit from Rangers as interest continues to grow ahead of the summer transfer window, Afrik-Foot reports.

Fernandez has emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe following an impressive campaign in Scotland. Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea, along with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and French club Rennes, have all been linked with the 24-year-old as they look to strengthen their squads for next season.

The centre-back only joined the Gers last summer, but he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, establishing himself as one of the few standout performers during what was a disappointing season for the Scottish club.

Fernandez became a regular at the heart of Rangers’ defence and was rewarded with the club’s Men’s Player of the Season award. He also earned a place in the Scottish PFA Team of the Season, capping a remarkable first year at Ibrox.

His performances also caught the attention of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who handed him his maiden international call-up before giving him his senior debut in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran in March.

Rangers complete deal to sign Ben Godfrey

According to the BBC Sport, Rangers have reached an agreement with Serie A side Atalanta to sign centre-back Ben Godfrey.

The England defender is looking to revive his career in Scotland after struggling for regular opportunities since joining Atalanta, spending much of his time away from the club on loan.

Rangers have already finalized a loan move that includes an option to make the transfer permanent, as they prepare to strengthen their defence on a long-term basis.

Godfrey now becomes Rangers’ third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie, as the club continues its rebuilding process ahead of next season after falling short in the race for silverware last term.

How Arsenal and Rennes can benefit from this

Fernandez’s outstanding campaign has attracted interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and Rangers have already placed a valuation of more than £20 million on the Nigerian defender.

Ideally, Rangers would prefer to keep Fernandez for at least another season. He was one of their most consistent performers last term, and retaining him would provide stability as they look to rebuild and mount a stronger challenge on all fronts next season.

However, interest from top clubs could become difficult to resist, particularly if Rangers receive an offer that matches their valuation. Fernandez himself could also be tempted by the opportunity to test himself at a higher level.

With that in mind, Rangers appear to be planning for every possible outcome. Rather than waiting until Fernandez’s future is resolved, the Scottish club have moved quickly to sign an experienced replacement.

Ben Godfrey’s arrival would not only add proven quality to the defence, it would also soften their stance on Fernandez and they would not stand in his way if a suitable offer arrives.

This could work in the favour of the interested clubs, especially Arsenal and Rennes who have shown the strongest interest in the Nigerian international.

Both clubs can now intensify their pursuit in an attempt to wrap up a deal quickly and negotiations with Rangers could become more straightforward.

As interest in the Super Eagles defender continues to grow, it may only be a matter of time before his future is settled, with a move to either England or France looking more likely as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.
