The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) recently conducted its National Convention and primaries in Kano, where it warned members about what it described as President Tinubu’s attempts to maintain power through any means necessary.
“We urge our members to remain alert, as the mercenary politics that once undermined the June 12 election during the botched Third Republic have now been refined by the Tinubu regime,” said the party’s National Chairman, Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu.
Daudu, whose cabinet members were re‑elected unopposed, added that the PRP distinguishes itself from “marketers” who invite members of the ruling class to use the party as a stepping‑stone to power, emphasizing that politics should be a public service rather than a private enterprise.
He argued that President Tinubu’s alleged “hold‑to‑power” syndrome has led most opposition parties to confront mercenaries who act as government tools, undermining collective opposition and promoting a dominant‑party autocracy.
“As a result, under President Tinubu, Nigeria has slipped from consolidating democratic gains toward enthroning autocracy under a dominant‑party rule; the APC, as the ruling party, operates above the law,” he said.
Daudu also claimed that the separation of powers is effectively absent, with the legislature acting as an extension of the executive and the judiciary increasingly perceived as compliant with the regime.
“State resources are now highly personalized; high‑ranking public office holders have become overnight billionaires. Anti‑corruption watchdogs appear toothless and impotent,” he noted.
The PRP chairman stressed that he does not believe President Tinubu will remain in power through any unscrupulous means, and that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not yet prepared to act as an independent arbiter under its current leadership.
Consequently, he said, the PRP’s elected representatives from this convention and primaries will serve as foot soldiers in the ongoing struggle for freedom, social justice, and development in Nigeria.
