Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said on Sunday that President Bola Tinubu’s decisive win in the party’s presidential primary demonstrates that internal democracy is being practiced—a contrast he drew with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is currently grappling with zoning disputes over its presidential candidate.
Okechukwu praised Tinubu for his landslide victory in the APC presidential primary election.
In a signed statement, the former Director General of the Voice of Nigeria lauded the APC leadership for adhering to the law by conducting direct primaries for the first time in Nigeria, covering all 8,809 electoral wards nationwide.
He also warned that Tinubu’s overwhelming win presents significant challenges for the APC.
“May I congratulate Mr President for his landslide victory and join him in positing that the victory poses enormous challenges to our great party, because to whom much is given, much is expected. In fact, I am in league with Mr President in his profound statement: ‘I’m just excited; they challenge me to do more.’”
Okechukwu noted that the polling results from various states were impressive and reflected the trust party members place in President Tinubu.
He cited figures such as Ogun State with 322,485 votes; Benue State with 374,787 votes; Rivers State with 280,082 votes; Delta State with 407,646 votes; Abia State with 161,005 votes; and Osun State with 100,880 votes.
Okechukwu added that these strong results create major challenges for the President, as the 31 APC governors and APC lawmakers work toward a remarkable outcome in the 2027 presidential election.
“My worries about the high expectations he mentioned come from several reasons. These include the past of low voter turnout, hunger in the country, clear insecurity, high unemployment, unreliable electricity supply, and a bad debt‑to‑service‑revenue ratio,” he said.
