The Presidency has responded after Nigerian citizens flooded the World Bank’s social media accounts to plead with the institution to halt loans to Nigeria.
Daily Post reports that Nigerians posted on the World Bank’s social media pages, urging the organization to deny the country further borrowing.
Speaking on Arise Television on Thursday, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, said, “This is the eve of the election, and it is difficult to determine whether the citizens who flooded the World Bank’s social media page asking that Nigeria be denied the right to borrow are opposition members.”
“Whether they are opposition or not, the government has a duty to execute the provisions of the constitution,” Bwala added.
“In leadership, you listen to people, but when it comes to carrying out your responsibilities, you do so in accordance with the law,” he continued.
“As a government, you will react to people on social media who say do not borrow. What if another set of people says go and borrow? How do you move as a leader?” Bwala asked.
“Leadership is not guided by certain things that do not have the backing of law. The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and experts in the field say our borrowing so far is still in order,” he concluded.
