Tottenham Hotspur failed to widen the gap with the Premier League relegation zone after a late penalty handed Leeds United a 1‑1 draw on Monday night.

Spurs appeared poised to secure a third straight league win when Mathys Tel struck a spectacular second‑half goal that gave the hosts the lead in North London.

Later, a mistake by the French forward allowed Leeds back into the match, and both sides settled for a point in a tense survival contest.

The draw leaves Tottenham just two points ahead of 18th‑placed West Ham, with only two games remaining in the season.

Tel shines before costly mistake

After a cautious first half, Tottenham broke the deadlock five minutes into the second period when Tel curled a superb shot from outside the box into the top corner.

The goal lifted the stadium atmosphere as Spurs looked to build on recent wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa.

Richarlison then missed a chance to double the lead, firing a close‑range effort over the crossbar, a miss that allowed Leeds to regain confidence.

With 16 minutes left, Tel’s night turned dramatically when he attempted a bicycle kick inside his own penalty area and inadvertently struck Ethan Ampadu on the head.

Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty to Leeds, which Dominic Calvert‑Lewin converted calmly to level the score.

Spurs survive late Leeds pressure

The equaliser shifted momentum in Leeds’ favour, and Tottenham struggled to re‑establish control during a tense closing stage.

Even with 13 minutes of added time, Spurs could not generate a clear chance, while Leeds pressed aggressively for a winner.

Leeds came close to completing the comeback in stoppage time when Sean Longstaff unleashed a powerful shot that forced Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to make a crucial save, the ball ricocheting onto the crossbar.

The final whistle confirmed a disappointing result for Tottenham, leaving their Premier League safety hopes uncertain as the season draws to a close.

Leeds, on the other hand, secured an important away point that maintains pressure on the clubs above them in the relegation battle.
