Power outage affects five northern Nigerian states and Niger Republic

Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced a scheduled blackout affecting five northern Nigerian states and part of the Niger Republic.

The agency issued the notice on Saturday through spokesperson Ndidi Mbah. It said the outage is part of routine maintenance on the Mando–Kumbotso 330kV transmission line, set for Sunday, 31 May 2026.

As a result, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) will be unable to supply power to Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, and portions of the Niger Republic.

“The outage is necessary to enable TCN’s maintenance crew to amend a damaged Red Phase Conductor on Tower T187 along the line route,” TCN explained. “Consequently, KEDCO will be unable to off‑take electricity to its customers across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States, as well as parts of Bauchi and Yobe States; customers in Gazaoua (Niger Republic) would also be affected by the outage,” the statement added.

TCN indicated the maintenance is expected to last from 9 am to 4 pm but did not specify when power would be restored to the affected areas.
