Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has outlined exactly what he expects from his side in the friendly against Portugal tonight, Afrik Foot reports.
The 48‑year‑old took charge of Nigeria in January 2025 and has instilled a clear philosophy and style of play in the three‑time African champions, earning praise from Roberto Martínez ahead of their encounter.
Under Chelle, Nigeria have lost only one match, the preparatory friendly against Egypt before the AFCON 2025 tournament. Since then the Super Eagles have remained unbeaten in 12 games and will look to extend that run tonight at Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s side are currently ranked fifth in the latest FIFA rankings, the highest placement of any team Nigeria has faced under the Franco‑Malian tactician.
Chelle’s focus for a match of this magnitude is not the result but whether his players can meet the demands of playing against one of the world’s best teams.
The former RC Lens defender wants his squad to adhere to the philosophy he has drilled in them, regardless of the opposition.

“They have many big players in that team, and we’re very happy to play against them, because it is a big game.”
“My only task now is to focus on my players, enforce the philosophy and our style of play like Wil [Ndidi] said.”
“It’s not a question of the result. The most important objective is to improve at everything. We have to retain that mindset,” the Super Eagles coach concluded.
Can Nigeria adhere to Chelle’s plans?
In a match that could feel like a World Cup quarter‑final, the Super Eagles will be without two of their biggest stars, Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
However, the Unity Cup demonstrated that several new faces in the squad can quickly adapt to the demands of Chelle’s system.
The game against a technically superior side may test the players’ patience, as they could be tempted to abandon caution when things do not go their way.
