The Super Eagles are set to face Portugal at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, according to Afrik‑Foot.

For the Seleção, this match is a crucial final rehearsal ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. For Nigeria, the game carries a different significance; the Super Eagles are on the sidelines after missing qualification following a disappointing group stage and continental playoff run.

Although the disparity in World Cup status is evident, the fixture promises quality football. Nigeria boasts talents such as Samuel Chukwueze, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, and Maduka Okoye—players capable of turning the game on their day.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s squad is densely packed with world‑class talent across every position.

Led by their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, they also feature elite performers such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Nuno Mendes.

On paper, Portugal is the clear favorite, but the Super Eagles have the technical ability to challenge their hosts. In addition, Portugal manager Roberto Martínez has hinted at tactical moves that could play into Nigeria’s hands.

Before the match, Martínez confirmed that he intends to use a heavily rotated squad against the Super Eagles.

During the pre‑match press conference, the manager said he plans to substitute all outfield players at various intervals, but he emphasized that goalkeeper Diogo Costa will remain on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

“Our idea is for João Cancelo to play more than 45 minutes; his playing style and physical condition allow for that,” Martínez explained. “The same applies to players like Bruno Fernandes and Rúben Dias. Every player has unique physical needs.”

“In goal, Diogo Costa will play the full 90 minutes because he is our number one. Goalkeeping is a position where consistency and clarity are paramount.”

He added, “For the rest of the team, we will rotate personnel while maintaining our core philosophy, intensity, and the collective objective of winning.”

Despite Martínez’s remarks about maintaining high intensity and flow, extensive rotations can disrupt team rhythm, potentially giving Eric Chelle and the Super Eagles an opening to exploit.

It remains to be seen whether Chelle will adopt his own rotation strategy. In the last match against Poland he also rotated, so the encounter promises an intriguing tactical battle.
