While the Super Eagles friendly against Portugal on June 10 may not carry competitive points, it could become one of the most important nights of Maduka Okoye’s international career, Afrik-Foot reports.
The match at the Dr. Magalhães Pessoa Stadium in Leiria presents the Udinese goalkeeper with a chance to complete a remarkable football journey that has taken him from national hero to public criticism and back to the top of European football.
Okoye’s Super Eagles story can be divided into four major chapters. His international breakthrough arrived in October 2019 when he made his senior debut against Brazil after replacing the injured Francis Uzoho. At the time, he was only 19 years old and playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf’s reserve side in Germany. His move to Sparta Rotterdam soon accelerated his development, and former coach Gernot Rohr handed him Nigeria’s number-one shirt ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
However, his rapid rise suffered a painful setback during the delayed AFCON 2021 tournament in Cameroon. In Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Tunisia, Youssef Msakni’s long-range strike slipped past Okoye, leading to a 1-0 defeat and elimination. The mistake triggered intense criticism from supporters and pundits. Combined with a difficult spell at Watford, where playing opportunities became scarce, Okoye stepped away from the Super Eagles setup.

Francis Uzoho returned but endured inconsistent performances. Ahead of the 2023 AFCON tournament, played in early 2024, José Peseiro turned to Stanley Nwabali. The Chippa United goalkeeper responded superbly, helping Nigeria reach the final and earning widespread admiration from supporters.
Yet Okoye refused to disappear. The goalkeeper rebuilt his career in Italy with Udinese, producing arguably the finest season of his professional life. He registered 10 clean sheets in 29 Serie A matches, delivered outstanding displays against giants such as AC Milan and Juventus, and was voted Udinese’s Player of the Season for 2025/26.
His improvement also coincided with a tactical shift in the Super Eagles. Under Eric Chelle, Nigeria increasingly prioritise building attacks from the back, and Okoye’s passing range, composure and footwork have made him a natural fit for that approach.
His return to the national team has only intensified the battle with Nwabali.

Okoye’s strongest statement yet came during Nigeria’s 2-2 friendly draw against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw.
The Udinese goalkeeper earned an impressive rating and was widely regarded as Nigeria’s best performer despite conceding twice. His display prevented Poland from securing victory and showed the qualities that have made him one of Serie A’s standout goalkeepers.
One of the defining moments arrived after a misplaced pass from Zaidu Sanusi gifted Poland captain Robert Lewandowski a clear opportunity. Okoye reacted brilliantly, blocking the Barcelona striker’s first effort. Shortly after, Okoye produced a stunning double save, demonstrating elite reflexes and composure under pressure.
Throughout the match, he repeatedly smothered dangerous low shots and looked comfortable commanding his area.

Kacper Potulski’s opener arrived in first-half stoppage time following a defensive breakdown inside Nigeria’s six-yard box. The second goal came in the 95th minute when Przemysław Wiśniewski unleashed a stunning 26-yard volley into the top corner.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle quickly defended his goalkeeper after the match.
“People who blame Okoye for the goal didn’t watch the game. You can see that he kept us in the game and the goal can beat any goalkeeper in the world. We need to be fair about these things. I am happy with his performance and that’s all that matters.”
Now comes the ultimate test. Portugal’s attack could feature Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and several other elite players heading toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The fixture also carries emotional significance for Nigeria after the painful 4-0 defeat suffered against Portugal in Lisbon in November 2022.

A commanding display in Leiria would strengthen his claim to become Nigeria’s undisputed number one again. It would also reinforce Chelle’s preference for a ball-playing goalkeeper capable of launching attacks from deep while remaining reliable against world-class opposition.
Stanley Nwabali still possesses the trust earned from his AFCON heroics and remains a serious contender for the shirt. Yet Okoye’s performances in Serie A and his outstanding display against Poland have transformed the conversation.
Four years ago, many wondered whether he would ever recover from AFCON disappointment. On June 10, against Ronaldo, Fernandes and Portugal, he has the chance to complete one of the most remarkable redemption stories in recent Super Eagles history.
