During a state visit to Spain that began on Saturday, Pope Leo XIV revealed his personal preference for Real Madrid over Barcelona, a departure from the diplomatic neutrality typically expected of the pontiff.
When asked on the papal aircraft which of La Liga’s two biggest clubs he favored, Leo chose Los Blancos, joking that “the pope is for all teams, but (Robert) Prevost is Real Madrid!” He was referring to his secular name.
Real Madrid will feature prominently in the pope’s week‑long itinerary, which includes visits to Madrid and Barcelona.
On Saturday evening, the pope will preside over a prayer vigil outside the Bernabéu stadium, an event that is expected to attract 400,000 spectators.
On Monday, the Bernabéu will host a meeting between the pope and the local diocesan community.
The US‑born pontiff also said he would “certainly support” his country at the World Cup that begins on June 11, adding that he was unsure how many matches he would be able to attend.
