During a state visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV surprised observers by meeting Puerto Rican singer‑songwriter Bad Bunny at Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni confirmed the encounter, saying, “Yes… I confirm it. He (Bad Bunny) was with his family and some other people,” and that the pope “greeted them briefly before leaving the stadium.”

Spanish media reported that the papal team and Bad Bunny’s entourage were still deciding when to release photographs of the meeting.

On the third day of the pope’s visit, roughly 80,000 people attended a gathering at the Bernabéu for a meeting between the pope and Madrid’s diocesan community.

The pope’s stay in Madrid overlapped with a series of concerts by Bad Bunny at the Metropolitano stadium, home to Real Madrid’s cross‑town rivals Atlético Madrid, as part of his “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos” (“I Should Have Taken More Photos”) world tour.

Some commentators noted that the event highlights a generational divide in a country where traditional Catholic observance has declined for decades, with young people torn between spirituality and popular music.

When asked about the trend, the pope said, “I am very pleased by the reports that young people are increasingly interested in the Catholic Church.” He added, “I think many will see Bad Bunny. But I think there will also be a few here to see the pope. And that says something.”
