The Osun State Police Command has issued a warning to political actors, urging them not to vandalise campaign materials as the 2026 governorship election approaches.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan cautioned anyone involved in such acts to cease immediately, stating that violators will face the full force of the law and that these incidents could exacerbate political tensions.
The alert comes amid mutual accusations between the Accord Party and the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding the demolition of campaign billboards and posters, an episode viewed as a potential threat to the state’s peace.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi announced that a discreet investigation has been launched to identify the perpetrators.
The police described the destruction of campaign materials as a criminal offence, an attack on public property and authority, and warned that such conduct could spark unrest and erode the relative tranquility currently enjoyed in Osun State.
“The Command views these acts as criminal and a threat to public peace. Such activities are capable of causing tension, unnecessary unrest, and undermining efforts aimed at sustaining peace in the state,” the statement read.
Authorities called on all political parties, candidates, and supporters to operate within the law and adhere strictly to the Electoral Act, emphasizing the importance of political tolerance and peaceful engagement.
Gotan added that the command will not tolerate any action that disrupts public order, and that individuals found guilty will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
Residents were also urged to remain law‑abiding, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
