Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, has announced a statewide operation to seize vehicles that travel on Lagos roads without number plates or with concealed registration marks. Offenders will be arrested and their vehicles impounded immediately.
According to Tijani, the directive is part of a broader effort to strengthen the state’s security framework and prevent criminal elements from entering Lagos through unregistered vehicles.
The order was issued during a strategic meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Commanders of Tactical Units at the Officers’ Mess in Ikeja yesterday.
Tijani briefed the officers on resolutions from a recent conference with Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, and outlined new security measures aimed at tightening safety across Lagos.
“The Inspector‑General emphasized the need for all vehicles on the road to display their plate numbers. No vehicle should be allowed on the road without a plate or with a covered plate. Any vehicle found in violation will be impounded,” Tijani said.
He added that “most vehicles used by criminals are either not registered or have their plate numbers covered. Apart from those legally permitted to cover their plates, there are no other exceptions.”
CP Tijani also instructed all DPOs to intensify community policing and intelligence gathering at the grassroots level, stressing that effective security requires active collaboration between police and residents.
He announced that the command would maintain joint patrols and intelligence sharing with other security agencies, especially in border communities and along waterways, to curb the movement of criminal elements into Lagos.
Assuring residents of the command’s readiness to address emerging threats, Tijani said, “Lagos Police Command has maintained a strong intelligence network and will continue working closely with transport unions, community leaders and other stakeholders to keep the state safe. Our goal is to ensure that Lagos remains secure and that criminal elements find no space to operate.”
