Police to charge man with assault after altercation over pot of soup

The Abia State Police Command has reported that it has detained 37‑year‑old Agwu Ukpo, who was seen in a viral video assaulting a woman in Aba.

Police say the suspect, a native of Akanu Ohafia, struck victim Amarachi Chinyere over a disagreement about a pot of soup.

DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Abia Command arrested the suspect after receiving actionable intelligence.

Chinaka added that the case is currently being investigated discreetly by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and that the suspect will be charged to court once the investigations are complete.

The Abia State Police Command condemned the act as barbaric and inhumane, emphasizing that such domestic violence is unacceptable under any circumstances.

“Members of the public are urged to desist from all forms of violence, as the Command remains fully committed to ensuring justice is served in the state and that perpetrators of crime will be brought to account,” the statement read.
