Police officers from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command intervened to save two women from a mob in Uyo, the state capital.
DSP Timfon John, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, released a statement on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, saying the incident took place at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Ring Road 3 in Uyo.
According to John, the enraged crowd stripped the women, assaulted them, and tried to execute them over allegations that had not yet been confirmed by official authorities.
State Commissioner for Health Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, who was en route to his office when he saw the scene, called the police after noticing that one woman was already badly injured and bleeding heavily.
"When we received the distress call, Command operatives moved quickly to the scene, dispersed the violent crowd, rescued the victims from imminent danger, and transported them to a medical facility where they are now receiving treatment and responding positively to care," the statement added.
John also reported that, following immediate intelligence‑led operations, a suspect named Emediong Robert, a 22‑year‑old male from Ikot Ekwere in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, was arrested on site for inciting the mob and allegedly calling for the victims’ execution during the attack.
Commissioner of Police CP Baba Mohammed Azare has ordered a thorough manhunt for everyone involved, vowing that all perpetrators, sponsors, and accomplices will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted promptly.
The Commissioner warned that Akwa Ibom State will not become a place where criminal mobs can brutalise citizens under any pretext, and that the Police Command will use the full force of the law against those who threaten public peace, safety, and security.
He further stressed that no allegation justifies public humiliation, torture, assault, or attempted murder, reminding that every suspect remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
