The Secretary of the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Olalekan Akindoju, has been released by the Osun State Police Command.

Earlier, DAILY POST reported that Akindoju was taken into custody at his home early on Thursday morning by officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Osun State Police Command.

Osun NUJ Chairman Adeyemi Aboderin confirmed the arrest on the union’s official WhatsApp platform.

He wrote, “IMPORTANT NOTICE: Policemen reportedly arrested Hon. Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju at his residence on Thursday morning. His apartment was allegedly burst by policemen and taken to the State CID, Osogbo. More details coming…”

Daniel Odeyemi, Chairman of the Rave FM Chapel of the NUJ—where Akindoju is a member—also confirmed that police officers arrived at his residence and took him away. He said, “Lekan called the Head of Station this morning and said police officers stormed his house and they are taking him to the state CID.”

Odeyemi added that the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Rave FM, Mr. Femi Adefila, had gone to the Osun State Police Command headquarters regarding the matter.

Later that day, Aboderin posted another update on WhatsApp, stating that Akindoju had been released unconditionally. He attributed the arrest to a case of mistaken identity.

Prior to Akindoju’s release, Osun State Police Command spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi told journalists that the police were working to determine what had occurred. He confirmed that he had located the station where Akindoju was being held to investigate the situation. Ojelabi also noted that the Osun NUJ Chairman, Aboderin, and other union officials were present at the police headquarters.
