Police launch crackdown on obscured vehicle number plates in Rivers

The Police Command in Rivers State has launched a statewide operation to enforce compliance with vehicle registration plate regulations. The initiative targets vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised or unregistered number plates.

ASP Blessing Agabe, the command’s spokesperson, announced the enforcement exercise on Monday in Port Harcourt. She said the move follows a directive from Inspector‑General of Police Olatunji Disu, aimed at improving public safety and strengthening security.

According to Agabe, the operation seeks to prevent criminal elements from hiding their identities and conducting unlawful activities. “The enforcement exercise will commence on June 15 across Rivers State,” she said.

Agabe reported that CP Olugbenga Adepoju, the Commissioner of Police for Rivers, has instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure immediate compliance. Officers are to enforce the directive within their respective jurisdictions. “Any vehicle found violating the directive will be impounded,” she added. Offenders will be prosecuted under existing laws.

Vehicle owners and motorists are urged to affix their registration number plates properly and keep them clearly visible. “Motorists should ensure that their number plates are free from any form of obstruction or alteration to avoid arrest, impoundment or prosecution,” Agabe advised.

She also cautioned officers involved in the operation to conduct themselves professionally and lawfully. The command emphasized that the exercise should not be used for harassment, intimidation or extortion. “Any officer found engaging in unprofessional conduct or extortion will face strict disciplinary action,” she said.

Agabe reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, protecting lives and property, and implementing proactive measures to enhance public safety across the state. (NAN)
