The Kogi State Police Command reports that it has repelled an armed attack on the Government Secondary School in Iluke, a community within Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
ASP Adusat Salihu, the Police Public Relations Officer, said the attackers, who arrived on roughly 40 motorcycles, targeted the school while students were sitting for the WAEC English Language examination.
Police received a distress call at about 10:00 a.m. that a large group of armed men had stormed the school and surrounding area with the intent to abduct students and other residents.
The Divisional Police Officer of Kabba “A” Division immediately mobilised officers together with members of the Police Mobile Force and tactical units. Military personnel and local vigilante groups also joined the response.
The joint security team engaged the attackers in a gun duel, forcing them to flee into nearby bushes.
Preliminary findings indicate that no mass abduction was carried out, but investigations are continuing to determine the full details of the incident.
Three individuals were confirmed killed during the attack: Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70; and a six‑year‑old boy, Sunday Ayele.
Police have intensified efforts to locate the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
During the exchange of fire, one bandit was reportedly neutralised, while a member of the security team sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State has ordered continued bush‑combing operations and increased patrols in the affected area.
The command urges residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue to provide credible information to security agencies.
