The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, has ordered the immediate removal of all illegal checkpoints, roadblocks, and unauthorized revenue‑collection points across the state.
In a statement released on Friday by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet, the directive aims to improve public safety, ensure the free flow of traffic, and end the harassment and extortion of commuters by illicit revenue collectors.
The order covers every route in the state, with particular emphasis on major federal highways such as the Makurdi‑Lafia, Makurdi‑Gboko, Ugbema‑Vandeikya, Gboko‑Aliade, and Otukpo‑Otukpa roads.
Commissioner Nwadiogbu instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit Commanders to enforce the directive immediately within their jurisdictions.
He clarified that only security checkpoints approved by the relevant authorities and manned by authorized security personnel with proper identification are permitted to operate in Benue.
The commissioner urged residents to report any instances of extortion, harassment, or suspicious checkpoints to the nearest police station, security formation, or appropriate government agency for swift action.
He warned that anyone found establishing or operating illegal checkpoints or collecting revenue at unauthorized locations would face disciplinary and legal consequences in accordance with the law.
The police commissioner reassured the public that the Nigeria Police Force, together with other security agencies, remains dedicated to protecting lives and property throughout Benue State.
He also appealed to citizens to stay vigilant and support security agencies by reporting suspicious individuals, movements, vehicles, and other activities through the nearest police station or the Benue State Police Command’s emergency lines.
