Police have arrested eight employees of the Niger State Internal Revenue Service (NSIRS) on allegations that they diverted billions of naira from the state treasury.
Sources say the suspects are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where detectives are interrogating them and auditing financial records to assess the full scope of the alleged fraud.
Investigators believe additional officials could be involved and that the alleged misappropriation may have continued for several years.
Sources also claim that senior officers may have profited from the scheme, with some suspects reportedly owning luxury vehicles and multiple properties both inside and outside the state.
Police have approached Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Minna to extend the suspects’ remand period, allowing investigators to finish their probe before prosecution.
The suspects are slated to be arraigned once the investigations conclude.
At the time of reporting, the Niger State Police Command had not yet released an official statement, and NSIRS officials had not commented on the allegations.
The incident occurs amid the state government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen revenue collection and enhance accountability in public institutions.
