Kaduna boy in viral rally video not detained – Police

The Police Command in Kaduna State has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video that shows a young boy at a campaign rally in Zaria.

The rally, which drew large crowds and was attended by Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, became the focus of social media speculation after the video was posted.

On Thursday, police spokesperson Mansir Hassan released a statement in Kaduna addressing the widespread claims that the boy had been arrested.

Hassan said the allegations that the boy was detained were completely false and not supported by the evidence gathered by investigators.

He explained that the boy was invited to the police station for clarification after the video appeared, rather than being forcibly taken by officers.

According to Hassan, the boy is a known supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and chose to respond to the police invitation voluntarily.

The spokesperson added that the boy appeared at the station with his blind father and other relatives, all of whom cooperated with the officers.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the boy already had multiple fractures in his right hand before the rally incident.

Hassan noted that the injuries worsened after unsuccessful attempts to treat them with traditional bone‑setting practices, leaving the boy in a serious condition that required urgent medical care beyond the family's financial means.

He said arrangements were made for the boy to seek assistance after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas drew attention to the situation.

During the rally, the boy positioned himself in the front row to gain the Speaker’s and other officials’ attention. He stretched out his injured hand in an attempt to signal for help and medical support.

Hassan said the crowd’s movement and pressure caused a misunderstanding of the boy’s gesture, which was later misrepresented online.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the boy spent less than an hour at the station for clarification before being released peacefully.

He added that the boy left with his father after officers verified the facts and found no grounds for detention or further action.

Hassan urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims that could inflame tensions or damage trust in security agencies, and advised people to rely only on credible, official sources when sharing sensitive information about security and public order.
