The Plateau State Government announced a “state of war against terrorists and enemies of the state” after a series of coordinated attacks were recorded in various parts of the state over the last four months.
The declaration followed an emergency meeting of the State Security Council, convened on Tuesday by Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Rayfield Government House in Jos.
Speaking to journalists after the session, Secretary to the State Government Samuel Jatau said the council conducted an extensive review of the deteriorating security situation and adopted a number of measures intended to protect lives and property.
Jatau noted, “Following the meeting, the Plateau State Security Council held an emergency session in which the current security situation in the state was critically deliberated.”
Attendees included security chiefs, the chairmen of the 17 local government areas, and the Chairman of the Plateau State Joint Traditional Council, His Majesty the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba.
Jatau reported that council members observed Plateau had been subjected to sustained attacks in recent months, with signs indicating the assaults were coordinated.
To restore security, the council resolved to tighten enforcement of existing restrictions on motorcycle operations, night grazing, and illegal mining activities, which authorities believe have contributed to the state’s insecurity.
The council also instructed security agencies to reclaim ungoverned territories, public institutions, and other vulnerable sites throughout the state.
To support security operations, the government approved additional logistics—such as motorcycles and operational vehicles—to improve rapid response and field effectiveness.
The council further agreed to enhance intelligence sharing and collaboration between local government security structures and host communities.
Regarding public order, the government warned that obstructing highways will now be treated as a criminal offence, with violators subject to prosecution.
Authorities also stressed the need to secure farmlands before the farming season to ensure safe agricultural activities for residents.
Traditional rulers were urged to exercise closer supervision of cultural and community associations operating within their domains.
Stating the government’s position, Jatau declared, “Plateau State is in a state of war with terrorists and enemies of the state.”
He added that the administration remains committed to protecting the lives, property, and communities of residents throughout the state.
The government also announced a renewed crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse, declaring war on drug dealers, suppliers, and users operating within the state.
