Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, better known as Mr P and formerly part of the now‑disbanded duo P‑Square, has responded to recent calls for him to retire.
According to Daily Post, some fans have urged the 44‑year‑old to step away from music, arguing that he should not be performing Afrobeats at his age.
In a recent interview with The Beat FM Lagos, Mr P dismissed the notion that a musician can retire, noting that “there is no retirement in music.”
He cited Michael Jackson as an example, pointing out that the late pop icon was still producing music and planning a world tour in his 50s before his death.
Mr P said that those demanding his retirement are looking for a reason to bring him down.
“We should be careful of how people try to put others down. There’s no retirement in music. I don’t know why some people think there’s retirement in music. Michael Jackson was over 50 and was still planning a world tour before he died. It’s only in Nigeria that somebody would just wake up and start calling on musicians to retire. I have seen some people do the same thing to Wizkid,”
