Peter Obi’s Media Office rejects ‘Ruling Class’ agenda, urges focus on national issues

ABUJA — The Media Office of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has rejected what it described as the “rules of engagement set by the ruling class”, insisting that those responsible for the country’s challenges should not determine the focus of public discourse.

The office said the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement and its supporters would not be drawn into what it described as trivial controversies, urging Nigerians to concentrate on issues affecting the country, including economic hardship, insecurity and poor governance.

In a statement on Wednesday by the spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Office, Idris Zekeri, the group said no amount of alleged distractions or smear campaigns would deter Obi from speaking on national issues and advocating for reforms.

The statement followed reactions to Obi’s recent television interview, with the media office accusing political actors of attempting to divert attention from the issues raised by the former Anambra State governor.

The office said the NDC presidential candidate remained committed to building a Nigeria based on competence, character, transparency and practical solutions.

It said the country was facing a governance crisis rather than a contest over political narratives.

” The debate that Nigeria desperately needs today is not about political drama or deliberate semantic distortions; it is about how to rescue a failing economy, restore the purchasing power of the naira, secure innocent lives, and transit our nation from a consumption-driven economy to a productive powerhouse,” the statement said.

The media office alleged that while Nigerians continue to face economic difficulties, including rising food prices, unemployment and insecurity, some political actors were focusing on issues it described as distractions.

It said: “The Obi-Kwankwaso Movement and the millions of patriotic Nigerians who stand with us will not be dragged into the gutter of trivial controversies created by those who have failed the nation. We refuse to allow those responsible for the country’s current plight to set the agenda for public discourse.”

The group urged the media and Nigerians, particularly young people, to remain focused on issues affecting their future and demand accountability from political leaders.

It challenged stakeholders to seek answers on how to address food inflation, insecurity affecting farming and transportation, and the increasing number of Nigerians facing economic hardship.

The statement added that Obi remained committed to promoting a new Nigeria founded on competence, character, transparency and actionable solutions.

“Let us remain focused on the issues that truly matter. A new Nigeria is possible, but only if we refuse to be distracted,” it stated.
