Why does Obi avoid party primaries? Critics, analysts differ

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has denied a viral claim that he secured 45 million votes in a supposed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primary, calling the report false and misleading.

The allegation, which spread widely on social media and certain online outlets, asserted that Obi had won an imaginary NDC primary election.

Obi’s media office rejected the claim entirely, stating that no such party primary ever occurred.

In a statement released on Tuesday by spokesperson Ibrahim Umar, the office described the circulated figures as “entirely false” and baseless.

“The attention of the Peter Obi Media Office has been drawn to certain 45 million primary vote figures currently circulating on social media and various news platforms, purporting to be the breakdown of official results from an imaginary primary by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ascribed to Mr Peter Obi,” the statement read.

The office clarified that no primary election was conducted and no results were produced, urging the public, supporters, and media organizations to disregard the report.

It also emphasized that official information about Mr Obi’s political activities would only be released through verified and authorized channels.

The statement accused those responsible for the publication of attempting to misrepresent and involve the former presidential candidate in fraudulent narratives.
