Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged President Bola Tinubu to step down, citing the president’s inability to tackle Nigeria’s escalating economic and security problems.
Obi made the appeal on Monday, linking it to the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which he said demonstrated a culture of accountability in public office.
According to Obi, Starmer’s decision to resign followed growing public discontent over economic stagnation, rising living costs and unfulfilled campaign promises.
Drawing a comparison with Nigeria, Obi recalled that before the 2015 general election, Tinubu had repeatedly called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign amid concerns over insecurity and economic hardship, including the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
He also noted that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu pledged to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption and enhance the welfare of Nigerians, while reportedly warning voters not to support him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those promises.
Obi argued that conditions in the country have worsened since Tinubu took office, citing persistent power shortages, increasing insecurity, widespread kidnappings and growing economic hardship.
He further claimed that key sectors such as infrastructure, transportation and anti‑corruption efforts have suffered setbacks, adding that Nigerians are facing severe socio‑economic challenges.
“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi said.
He maintained that such a move would promote accountability in leadership and help build a political culture where public officials take responsibility for their actions and performance.
Obi added that holding leaders accountable for failures in office would strengthen democratic governance and contribute to building a better future for coming generations.
