The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed Mustapha Sule Lamido as its 2023 governorship candidate for Jigawa State after he successfully passed the party’s screening process.
The PDP screening committee in Abuja cleared Lamido on Thursday, ahead of the party’s primary scheduled for May 21.
Lamido is the sole aspirant who has been screened for the PDP governorship ticket in Jigawa, positioning him as the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 general election against incumbent governor Umar Namadi of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
After the screening, Lamido said his decision to run was motivated by a desire to bring positive change to the state’s political landscape and to meet the needs of its people.
He also voiced concern about the growing trend of defections among politicians, attributing it to a lack of ideological commitment among some actors.
According to Lamido, the younger generation is determined to transform the country’s political system through purposeful leadership and dedication.
He described the PDP as the only opposition party with strong ideologies capable of addressing the aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
Lamido noted that the party secured over 400,000 votes in the previous election and expressed confidence that the PDP would achieve even better results in the 2027 polls.
