Monica Yahaya, a 33‑year‑old candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, announced her intention to run for governor of Gombe State in the 2027 election, pledging inclusive leadership, women’s empowerment and grassroots development.

She made the announcement on Tuesday, shortly after receiving her nomination form at the PDP secretariat in Gombe, noting that years of community service and work with rural women motivated her ambition.

“I’m into community development. I work with rural women. That is how I picked my interest to contest for this position,” she said.

She said her mission is to narrow the leadership gap by ensuring stronger representation for women and youth in government.

“I see a gap that we need to close. How we can close it is by representing women positively,” she stated.

When asked how she would differ as governor, Monica asserted that women have the capacity to provide effective leadership when afforded the chance.

“If opportunity is given, Gombe people will see a difference. When you give a chance to a woman to be in this position, you will see the wonders that she will perform,” she said.

She observed that women remain largely marginalised in politics despite their contributions to society.
