Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has stated that primary elections within political parties are simply contests, not wars.

Obasa made the comment in his Democracy Day message to the people of the state and to Nigerians nationwide.

The message was signed by his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation, Adeshina Oyetayo.

In the statement released to DAILY POST, Obasa urged politicians to focus on internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect.

Speaking on the significance of June 12, he noted that the date remains a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s history.

“Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in the defence of freedom, justice, and democratic values,” he said.

“This day commemorates the sacrifices of pro‑democracy heroes. Twenty‑seven years into our Fourth Republic, we reaffirm our unshakeable faith in democratic governance as the best path to national development and individual prosperity.”

“Party primaries are contests, not wars. We must prioritise internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect. Let us resolve differences through democratic means, strengthen our structures, and remain focused on delivering good governance to Nigerians.”

“A united APC will not only consolidate democratic gains but also position the party to continue driving national progress and stability,” he added.
