Makinde confirms teacher’s killing, arrest of six suspects

Gov. Seyi Makinde has confirmed that one of the teachers was killed and that six suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping that took place in the Ahoro-Esinele Community of Oyo State.

The statement was issued by the governor’s special adviser on media, Dr Suleimon Olanrewaju, in Ibadan on Monday.

Makinde expressed condolences to the victim’s family and said the government would pursue both kinetic and non‑kinetic measures to rescue the remaining abducted individuals.

He also expressed sympathy for the families of the soldiers, Amotekun Corps personnel, and local vigilantes who died during the rescue operation. According to the governor, the operatives were killed when they triggered improvised explosive devices planted by the abductors.

Makinde reported that wounded security personnel are responding well to treatment and that the government will cover all costs for their care.

The governor urged victims’ relatives, religious bodies, and other stakeholders to exercise patience, promising that the government will continue to work to reunite the abducted with their families.

“There may not be quick fixes, but we will continue to push ourselves to the limit to resolve this quickly,” he said.

He added, “What we know right now is that seven teachers in all were abducted. Unfortunately, we received a video this morning that one of the teachers, the mathematics teacher, was killed by the terrorists.”

Makinde noted that the operation has yielded some successes, with several individuals already arrested. “According to the commissioner of police, about six individuals have been arrested within the locality,” he said. “Some of them may be informants or people running logistics for the terrorists. Three additional individuals of interest have been arrested by another security outfit within the state.”

The governor acknowledged the need to collaborate with neighbouring states to curb the flow of terrorists into Oyo State. “We must appreciate the fact that with pressure on the terrorists and bandits in the North‑West and North‑East, they will keep moving southwards,” he said. “We are talking. The governor of Kwara has spoken to me, but the problem is that when you have pressure in one place, we must be prepared on this side to either repel or neutralise terrorists fleeing the pressure point.”

He also assured citizens that they would receive daily briefings on the progress of the rescue operation. (NAN)
