Ooni, Oluwo make case for security

By Shina Abubakar Osogbo

After a recent attack on a school in Oyo State, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has urged rapid security measures to address the escalating threat.

Similarly, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has called on the Federal Government to strengthen the role of traditional rulers in confronting the growing menace.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, the Ooni described the school attack as a direct assault on the nation’s future, emphasizing that children and teachers must never become victims of criminal activity.

“Security agencies must intensify rescue operations to ensure the safe return of all victims still in captivity while bringing the perpetrators of the attack to justice,” he said.

He added, “I also urge Nigerians to support security agencies with credible information, vigilance, and community cooperation, noting that the fight against kidnapping requires collective responsibility and national unity.”

In a separate statement issued by his spokesperson, Alli Ibrahim, the Oluwo noted that the palace serves as the first point of contact during any breach and urged the government to empower monarchs for a swift response to security incidents in their communities.

He said, “The bandit attack in the Ahoro-Esinele area of Oriire Local Government of Oyo State is condemnable. It is a heinous act against humanity and a complete desecration of Yorubaland and its heritage.”

“I call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to add another credit to his achievements by ensuring traditional rulers are empowered to secure their respective domains through the provision of necessary support and logistics,” he added.

He further urged the government, especially governors, to brace up to curb further encroachment and bandit attacks on Yorubaland, and to provide traditional rulers with security votes and other logistical support, noting that they are always the first point of contact.
