Oyetola and Others to Discuss Green Ports and Dockworkers’ Welfare at 2026 SCAN Day

Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola, former Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) President‑General Adewale Adeyanju, and Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS) President Aminu Umar, among other maritime leaders, will convene at the 2026 Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria (SCAN) Dockworkers’ Day to discuss sustainable practices and improved welfare for dockworkers across Nigerian seaports.

The SCAN‑organised event is set for 4 June at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, under the theme “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers.” It aims to spark dialogue on environmentally responsible port operations, the adoption of efficiency‑enhancing technologies, and the need to raise working conditions for dockworkers.

SCAN says the initiative seeks to align Nigeria’s port operations with global environmental standards while ensuring dockworkers are not left behind as the industry moves toward greener, technology‑driven systems.

In a joint statement signed by SCAN President Moses Ebosele and Organising Committee Chairman Yusuf Babalola, the association highlighted that its annual Dockworkers’ Day remains a vital platform for recognising dockworkers’ contributions to the national economy.

The statement also noted that the event would address emerging environmental and operational challenges facing Nigeria’s maritime sector.

“SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports,” the statement read.

SCAN added that as the global maritime industry evolves, there is a growing need to equip dockworkers with the skills and tools required to adapt to green port initiatives and digital transformation in shipping operations.

Umar is slated to deliver the keynote address, while Adeyanju, who also serves as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, will chair the occasion.

Additional goodwill messages are expected from the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Director‑General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, and other stakeholders across the maritime value chain.
