OYC urges Tinubu to free Kanu, warning of backlash in 2027

Insists trial unconstitutional, cites Dikko abduction case, demands immediate release

UMUAHIA – The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the umbrella sociocultural youth organization of the Igbo people worldwide, has renewed its demand for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The council argues that Kanu’s continued trial and incarceration are unconstitutional.

Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, national president of OYC, said in a statement that Kanu’s “rendition, detention, and ongoing prosecution are invalid,” asserting that both due‑process and international legal standards have been breached.

He noted that the case originated under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari and has persisted despite what he described as legal and diplomatic concerns.

According to Igboayaka, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu now has the opportunity to end the matter and demonstrate a commitment to justice and national reconciliation.

Igboayaka contended that Kanu’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya violated international law, drawing a parallel with the 1984 attempted abduction of former Transport Minister Umaru Dikko from London.

He recalled the “Dikko affair,” which sparked a diplomatic crisis between Nigeria and the United Kingdom after British authorities intercepted the operation.

The OYC president argued that the international standards applied in the Dikko case should likewise be enforced in Kanu’s situation.

Igboayaka warned that Kanu’s continued detention could have political repercussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He stated that it would be “unrealistic” to expect significant electoral support from voters in the South‑East if the IPOB leader remains in custody, suggesting the issue may shape regional political alignments.

While stopping short of endorsing any party, the group implied that resolving the case could aid national unity and political stability.

OYC urged the federal government to drop the case and release Kanu unconditionally, asserting that such action would promote reconciliation and reduce tensions.

Comrade Igboayaka said the organization’s stance is grounded in a commitment to justice, fairness, and constitutional governance, adding that prolonged detention without resolution erodes confidence in democratic institutions.
