Vandalism of Billboards Within the State
The Osun State Police Command issued a strong condemnation yesterday of recent vandalism and destruction of billboards and other government symbols across the state.
In a statement supplied to THISDAY by Deputy Superintendent of Police Abiodun Ojelabi, the police image-maker described the acts as criminal offenses that constitute a direct attack on public property, authority, and the peace currently enjoyed in Osun State.
He warned that such criminal behaviour can fuel tension, provoke unnecessary unrest, and undermine efforts to preserve the state’s relative peace.
The command called on all political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities strictly within the law and in full compliance with the Electoral Act.
He also urged political actors to engage in politics according to the rules, embracing peaceful participation, political tolerance, and lawful conduct, while avoiding actions that could disrupt law and order in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, cautioned any individuals or groups involved in these acts to cease immediately, stating that the command will not tolerate criminal conduct that threatens public peace.
He announced that police have launched a discreet investigation into the incidents, aiming to identify, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators in accordance with the law.
He appealed to the public to remain law‑abiding, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and report any suspicious movements or persons linked to these acts or related crimes to the nearest police station.
The command reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, and urged all stakeholders to cooperate in preserving public infrastructure and maintaining peace throughout the state.
