Police launch investigation

The chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Ashimiyu Ajibola, survived an alleged assassination attempt by suspected gunmen.

According to reports, the assailants attacked Ajibola at about 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday along the MDS area of Osogbo, the state capital.

Ajibola was shot during the attack but was not killed. Police officers immediately transported him to a hospital for treatment.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement from spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi. It said the attack occurred on June 3, 2026, at about 11:50 p.m. in the MDS area, when two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly tried to murder the chairman.

The statement added: “Upon receiving the distress call, the police mobilised tactical and conventional teams to the scene. A team of officers quickly evacuated the victim to a medical facility where he is now receiving treatment. Medical personnel have confirmed that Hon. Ajibola is in stable condition and responding well to treatment.”

“Simultaneously, other operational teams pursued the fleeing suspects in an effort to apprehend them and bring them to justice. Preliminary investigation at the scene recovered evidence, which is now undergoing forensic analysis.”

Police Commissioner Ibrahim Gotan condemned the attack and ordered a thorough investigation. He pledged to uncover the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible, and ensure their prompt arrest and prosecution.

Osun State Commissioner for Information Kolapo Alimi urged the police to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators.
