Securing a UEFA Champions League title is seen as the missing piece in Victor Osimhen’s ascent to being regarded among the world’s best strikers.
On the morning of yesterday’s “No Holds Barred” show on BrilaFm, former Nigeria and Inter Milan striker Obinna Nsofor praised Osimhen’s achievements with Galatasaray since leaving Napoli, but said that a move to one of Europe’s top clubs is necessary for him to win the Champions League.
“The only thing I see stopping Victor Osimhen from being the number one striker in the world is the UEFA Champions League. If he wins the UEFA Champions League, no one will say he’s number three; you will say he is the best,” Nsofor, who earned an Olympic silver medal with Nigeria’s U23 Dream Team at the 2008 Beijing Games, observed.
The former Nigerian international, who won the Serie A title and the Supercoppa in 2009 with Inter Milan, added that he hopes Osimhen will transfer to a major club this summer, citing Ademola Lookman’s move from Atalanta to Atlético Madrid as an example.
“Comparing Osimhen to strikers like Harry Kane and others right now, he will be considered outside the Top 3. So my prayer is that if there is a possibility to leave Galatasaray this summer, he should take the opportunity,” Nsofor said.
Osimhen helped Galatasaray defend its Turkish Super Lig title and now faces a decision about his future, even though he still has three years remaining on a contract that cost the club €75 million to acquire from Napoli.
Following renewed interest in the Nigerian striker, Turkish sporting media reported this week that Galatasaray will not accept a transfer fee below €150 million before allowing him to move to another European city on a permanent deal.
Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, and Manchester United are among the major clubs reportedly interested in signing Osimhen this summer.
