The organised labour movement, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has announced that it will begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage in July 2026.
Labour leaders made the announcement during a joint press conference held on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
Representatives acknowledged that many state governors have recognised the current N70,000 minimum wage as inadequate for meeting workers’ basic needs.
They urged governors not to unilaterally set a new wage figure, stressing that the proper negotiation process must be observed.
The organised labour movement also called on the government to pay all outstanding gratuity arrears.
The unions said they remain committed to engaging relevant stakeholders in the upcoming wage review to secure better welfare for Nigerian workers.
