Nigeria‑eligible centre‑back Ifeanyichukwu Onwuzulike is on the brink of joining Austrian champions Salzburg ahead of next season, according to Afrik‑Foot.

The Swiss‑born defender will leave Winterthur when his contract expires at the end of the current season, and Salzburg is reportedly close to finalising a deal for him.

Several clubs had been watching his progress in Switzerland, including Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, before the summer transfer window opened.

The 16‑year‑old progressed through Winterthur’s youth ranks and played for the club’s U17 side during the 2024‑25 campaign, making 15 appearances in all competitions. He started the 2025‑26 season with the U17s again, but his strong displays earned him a promotion to the U19 team in September.

Onwuzulike made 24 appearances in all competitions during the just‑finished season, 15 of which were for the U19 side where he started 14 times.

The future of the Nigeria‑eligible talent had been uncertain as the season drew to a close, especially with his contract at his boyhood club Winterthur set to expire.

Footy‑Africa reports that the 16‑year‑old is now on the brink of joining former Austrian champions Salzburg, with the deal pending a medical before it is finalised.

The move would see Onwuzulike sign an initial three‑year contract with the Red Bull‑owned club, keeping him there until at least the summer of 2029 before any further decision is made on his future.

Salzburg had been searching for a replacement for Joane Gadou, who joined Borussia Dortmund earlier this month on a long‑term deal, and quickly identified Onwuzulike as a suitable option, which accelerated their pursuit as they moved ahead of several other interested clubs.

The 17‑time Austrian champions have a long record of developing young talent before they move on to bigger clubs in the major European leagues. Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Sadio Mane all passed through the club, and Onwuzulike will hope to follow a similar path.

Meanwhile, the youngster will initially join the club’s youth setup after the move is completed, before he is gradually introduced to the first team.

Onwuzulike was born in Switzerland but remains eligible to represent Nigeria through his father, giving the Nigeria Football Federation a potential opportunity to secure his international allegiance in the future.

The 16‑year‑old has already represented Switzerland at several youth levels and Nigeria will need to convince him to switch allegiance before he can feature for the Super Eagles.

Head coach Eric Chelle has previously given opportunities to young players since taking charge and could begin monitoring the young centre‑back’s progress after his move to the Austrian league.

Onwuzulike’s move to Salzburg is expected to become official in the coming days, and the teenager will be keen to continue his development with the Austrian club, hoping to secure a move to a bigger European club in the future.
