IBADAN— The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, announced yesterday that Nigeria’s escalating security and economic problems can only be effectively addressed by returning to righteousness and a genuine fear of God.
The Alaafin, through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, delivered an Eid‑el‑Kabir message in which he said the country’s many challenges stem from a decline in moral consciousness and accountability before God.
He added that the distrust and divisions among Nigeria’s ethnic and religious groups are also consequences of waning spiritual values and insincerity among citizens.
The Alaafin stressed that the core of religion, as taught by Allah through His prophets and messengers, is unconditional submission to God’s will.
He said: “The various threats to security that are besetting our society and the resulting implications for the economy are nothing more than the outcome of a lack of awareness of ultimate accountability to God, especially in the life to come.”
“That is the only concept of religion acceptable to God,” he added.
“What we need, as a nation, are sincere, concerted and sustained efforts toward propagating the kind of God‑consciousness demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim. It will surely guarantee our nation and individuals a lasting solution to all the challenges confronting us.”
He continued: “However, all Allah wanted Ibrahim to demonstrate was the unreserved willingness to comply, not the actual slaughter of his son.”
The Alaafin urged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of doing good at all times, saying: “Another lesson is that Nigerians should learn the habit of doing good at all times since anyone can leave this world at any time.”
