Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, was appointed grand matron of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

During the ceremony held at the State House in Abuja, she emphasized that voluntary organisations should be leveraged to reshape youth attitudes by encouraging active participation.

“If they learn to help from an early age, it will not be hard for them to do so when they are older.”

She added that the role of Grand Matron represents a call to heightened service and offers her a chance to contribute further to society.

“I encourage people: if you have the capacity to help a neighbour in whatever way you can, do so.”

She acknowledged the significant role the Red Cross has played in the country's humanitarian work and expressed optimism that the nation’s challenges could be overcome.

“There is no challenge that is insurmountable if we have the right will, and we have strong political will to do right by the nation. Our assignment is a daily call to duty and we have to rise every day to do the work.”

She explained that her office has launched the National Food Bank Programme across all six geopolitical zones, aiming to eliminate or drastically reduce child malnutrition.

The NRCS National President, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, who led the team, thanked the First Lady for her ongoing humanitarian work through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
He noted that the Society acknowledges her strong commitment to the welfare of women, children, families, and vulnerable Nigerians.

“With over 1.5 million volunteers, the Society was established under the Act in 1960 as Nigeria’s sole public humanitarian services provider.”
