Okowa Commends Nigeria’s Performance at the African Senior Athletics Championships

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, congratulated Nigerian contingents on their sterling performance at the recently concluded 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, where the country finished fourth on the medals table.

Okowa, who led Team Nigeria to the competition, highlighted the outstanding victory of world‑record holder Tobi Amusan, who won gold in the 100m hurdles.

He specifically praised the women’s 4×100m, 4×400m and the mixed 4×400m relay teams for securing gold medals for the nation.

Okowa also acknowledged the relentless spirit of double silver medalist Rosemary Chukwuma, who earned silver in both the women’s 100m and 200m, for making the country proud.

According to Okowa, current national champion Chidera Ezeakor displayed class in the men’s 100m, claiming a bronze medal.

In the field events, the AFN President commended Olatoye Oyesade, Divine Oladipupo, Obiageri Amaechi, Adams Kure and Kparika Victoria Effiom for their individual outstanding performances.

The AFN President recognized the sacrifices and dedication of Nigerian coaches for the great achievement at the tournament.

Okowa said the federation was proud of the athletes’ conduct during the camp and noted that their overall performance signals the team’s strength ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

He praised the remarkable performances of young sprinters Rosemary Nwankwo and Miracle Ezechukwu, who stood tall among elite competitors at the championships.

Okowa, who appreciated the continued support of the National Sports Commission, assured athletes that the Federation would keep investing in the development of athletics at the grassroots level.
