Okon-George Aims for Commonwealth Games After Senior African Athletics Championship

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step,” said Patience Okon‑George, one of Nigeria’s top quarter‑mile runners, after she helped lead the national 4×400m relay team to victory at the Senior African Athletics Championship in Accra, Ghana.

Okon‑George praised the team’s performance, emphasizing that execution was the key to success.

“4×400m mixed has always been for Nigeria. Yesterday it was all about execution, right from the first leg to the end, just the way we planned it. It was great,” she said.

The quartet—Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Imeh and Patience Okon‑George—worked together to outpace their rivals.

Asuquo kept Nigeria competitive on the opening leg, while Jimoh surged from third place into the lead. Imeh maintained the advantage, and Okon‑George finished with a composed anchor leg that secured the win and sparked celebrations among teammates and officials.

She also encouraged the younger athletes on the squad to stay focused, noting that concentration is essential for true success.

“To the young ones in the team, my advice to them as a very experienced athlete is to stay focused. Everyone should focus on their goal. They may not get it today, but the sky is their limit,” she said.

Looking ahead, Okon‑George said her next goal is the Commonwealth Games.

She expressed confidence that she will perform well in Glasgow and proudly represent Nigeria.

“Ahead of the Commonwealth Games, I’m trying to build my race because I know that God has been so faithful to me, making me run my very best. I believe this year will be very good for me, and with God, everything is possible,” she said.
