In a session held in Isabo, Abeokuta, the Ogun State Magistrate Court sentenced fourteen individuals accused of waste dumping to two weeks’ imprisonment, with the possibility of a fine.
The defendants who faced a two‑count charge were Kareem Sherifat, Isiwat Ololade, Ojanuga Esther Usman Babatunde, Blessing John, Falodun Bukola, Agunbiade Titilayo, Oritogun Samson, Obasa Idowu, Solomon Adelani, Lateef Saidat, Taiwo Abimbola, Adeniyi Olayinka, and Precious Adeyeri.
Sanitarian Abolaji Dasaolu, who prosecuted the case, said the suspects were apprehended at about 8 a.m. in Tekobo, Idi‑Aba, within the Abeokuta Magisterial District, for dumping refuse on a public road.
Dasaolu highlighted that the discarded materials emitted a foul odor that attracted flies, potentially spreading cholera and posing a health risk. He also warned that depositing waste on public roads and drains could block drainage systems, increasing the risk of flooding and endangering life and property.
He noted that the offences violated the Ogun State Public Health Law of 2006 and Section 34(1) of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law of 2020.
Justice O Sam – Obaleye delivered the judgment, finding all defendants guilty of the two‑count charge and sentencing each to fourteen days’ imprisonment or a fine of N10,000 per count.
The judge also instructed the offenders to behave properly and cease dumping waste on roads and public places. Any future repeat offense would result in sentencing without the option of a fine.
