Oborevwori Guarantees Adequate Support for Train Accident Victims

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed deep sorrow over the train accident that occurred in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, and assured residents that the government would respond promptly and provide support to the victims.

The incident reportedly killed four people and injured more than 30 others.

In a statement issued yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor offered condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the swift recovery of those who sustained injuries.

Oborevwori described the accident as heartbreaking and unfortunate, emphasizing that the loss of lives was a painful tragedy for both the affected families and the state.

He said the state government acted quickly, mobilising relevant authorities to the scene to ensure an effective emergency response.

According to the governor, he immediately directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, along with the chairmen of Ika South and Ika North‑East Local Government Areas, to move to the scene and coordinate rescue efforts.

The governor also praised security agencies for their prompt intervention, noting that the Commissioner of Police was present and had deployed sufficient personnel to safeguard passengers’ luggage and other valuables on the train.

The statement added that injured passengers were promptly evacuated to nearby hospitals, while uninjured survivors were moved to town and the remains of the deceased were taken to the mortuary.

To facilitate evacuation, buses were dispatched immediately to transport survivors and injured passengers from the scene.

Providing an update on the victims’ condition, Chairman of Ika North‑East Local Government Area, Hon. Monday Odigwe, disclosed that 35 injured passengers were receiving medical care at three hospitals.

He said 13 victims are being treated at Central Hospital, Agbor; 12 at General Hospital, Owa‑Oyibu; and 10 at General Hospital, Owa‑Alero.

Odigwe also reported that officials had been assured that efforts would be made to lift the train.

Governor Oborevwori prayed for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives and for the strength of the families to endure the irreparable loss.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and safety of residents and assured them that the government would continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to those in hospitals.
